The Asplenium nidus “Crispy Wave” is one of the most attractive ferns to find its way out of the jungle and into our homes, famed for its wavy fronds and vibrant green colour. It is also prized for its ability to remove harmful compounds from the air and oxygenate the space around it, making it an ideal housemate. It looks great and it even cleans up after you - what more could you ask for?
Unlike most houseplants, however, Asplenium is also considered a delicacy. In Taiwan, where it is known as Shan Shu, the “Crispy Wave” is harvested in the wild and stir fried. It has even seen use as a folk medicine against spleen conditions, asthma and more. So whether you are looking for a lovely decorative plant or a healthy lunch, Asplenium fits the bill.
Asplenium is one of the most common and widespread species of fern on the planet, with a vast native range covering the tropical regions of east Africa, Asia, Australasia and Polynesia. Capable of growing on rocks and trees just as well as in soil, this fern is one of the tropics’ most successful inhabitants. Also known as a “nest fern”, Asplenium can grow almost as wide as it is tall, forming a dense nest of fronds high in the trees.
With a natural habitat in humid tropical forests, the Asplenium does best in a warm, moist environment. It can also thrive as a houseplant, especially if it receives regular sprays of water to keep it damp. A bathroom with natural light is the ideal place to keep your Asplenium. Since it is usually shaded by the canopy above, Asplenium prefers half-light and does not tolerate direct sunlight well.
